Confirmation Fights Stall Justice System

Still, the number of unfilled federal judicial posts is unprecedented for the fourth year of a president’s term, the nonprofit Constitutional Accountability Center said in a report this month. The group called 80 vacancies “the new normal.”
In his State of the Union speech last week, Obama pressed the Senate to pick up the pace and urged the chamber to alter its rules to guarantee nominees a confirmation vote within 90 days—a public call advocates hope will result in more and faster confirmations.
With Democratic control of the Senate, “there’s only so much a minority party can do in blocking judicial nominees with bipartisan support,” said Constitutional Accountability Center President Doug Kendall.
