Washington, DC – Today, Constitutional Accountability Center joined a diverse array of organizations in calling on networks hosting debates among Republican and Democratic presidential candidates to ask those candidates about the future of the U.S. Supreme Court.

In a letter to FOX News CEO Roger Ailes and NBC News President Deborah Turness, we urged both networks “to ask the candidates what they would look for in a potential Supreme Court Justice. Which current Justices, if any, would they use as models? What values, principles, legal philosophy and experience would they want to find in a nominee? Candidates’ answers would provide voters with critical information in both primary and general elections as they consider for whom to cast their vote.”

CAC Acting President Judith E. Schaeffer added, “The Supreme Court is perhaps the issue most critical to the Nation’s future that few Americans are thinking about. With the Court soon to have four Justices in their 80s, it is important that the presidential primary process include a serious discussion of the third branch of our government by all candidates. The next president could have enormous influence on the Court, not only over the next four years, but over the next forty. Those who seek our Nation’s highest office should be asked to let the American people know how, specifically, they intend to shape the Court.”
