RELEASE: DOJ Nominee Kristen Clarke Demonstrates She Is Exactly What the Civil Rights Division Needs in Senate Judiciary Committee Confirmation Hearing

WASHINGTON – Following a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee on the nomination of Kristen Clarke to be Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Rights Division, Constitutional Accountability Center President Elizabeth Wydra issued the following statement:

With her sterling intellect, mettle, and grace, Kristen Clarke defeated a barrage of bad-faith attacks from Republican Senators today, while underscoring the lessons of an extraordinary career that led up to her historic nomination by President Biden to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

As we explained to the Judiciary Committee in our letter supporting her nomination, “We at CAC have had the privilege of working closely with Ms. Clarke during her tenure at the Lawyers’ Committee, witnessing up close her genuine dedication to honoring and advancing core protections of the Constitution, furthering racial and social justice, and fighting for the most marginalized among us.”

The American people saw these qualities today, as well, and can take pride in such a strong choice to help Attorney General Merrick Garland and nominee for Associate Attorney General, Vanita Gupta, to lead the Justice Department. We look forward to the Judiciary Committee’s swift approval of Ms. Clarke’s nomination and confirmation by the full Senate.
